Indian minister arriving to inspect Koshi works

10/07/2009

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, July 10 - Indian Minister of Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal is arriving in the capital for a two-day visit on Saturday.

According to a highly placed source at the Ministry of Irrigation, the Indian minister is coming to Nepal to inspect the embankment repair and construction along the Koshi the Indian government is supporting. The floods during monsoon last year inflicted great loss of life and property both in India and Nepal after the mighty Koshi breached the embankments.

Minister Bansal is set to inspect the embankments along the Koshi on Sunday.

The water resources minister of the Indian state of Bihar visited the region many times. This is the first time that an Indian central minister is going to inspect the works as a part of preparation of strategy that the Indian government would take up in the future.

The minister is set to hold discussions with different political figures and bureaucrats in the capital.

According to the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Minister Bansal is scheduled to address a joint press meet along with Minister for Irrigation Bal Krishna Khand Sunday afternoon.
